Dimensions are simply a way of writing a physical quantity in terms of basic SI quantities raised to some power.

In short, derived physical quantities like energy, force, velocityare written as the product/ division of basic physical quantities like mass, time and length.

Most commonly, only mass, time and length are the dimensions used represented as M, T and L respectively.

For eg: I can write:

velocity = displacement/time.

Dimension of displacement =L

Dimension of time = T

v = [LT^-1]

similarly, acceleration = velocity/time

a = [LT^-2]

Force = mass × acceleration

F = [MLT^-2]
