Jones defined dipthong as 'a sound made by gliding from one vowel to another'. A dipthong literally means two sounds. It is also known as a gliding vowel.

The dipthongs can be classified according to the movement of the tongue as follows:

i. Opening dipthongs - They are the ones in which the tongue ends lower in the mouth, for instance, 'oh'.

ii. Closing dipthongs - Those in which the tongue ends higher in the mouth, for instance, 'I'.

iii. Centring dipthongs - Those in which the tongue ends in the central position in the mouth, for instance, 'air'.

They can be classified on the basis of the comparative importance of the different elements as follows:

i. Rising dipthongs - Those in which the second element seems to be more important, for instance, 'view'.

ii. Falling dipthongs - Those in which the first element seems to be more important. Most of the dipthongs in English are falling dipthongs.

Dipthongs can be classified on the basis of the extent of the movement of the tongue as follows:

i. Wide dipthongs - Those which show a larger movement for instance, from an open vowel to a close one like in 'I'.

ii. Narrow dipthongs - Those which show less movement for instance, from a half-close vowel to a close one like in 'day'.
