The term “Ploidy” tells us the number of sets of chromosomes that are found within the nucleus.

Haploid

Haploid cells are those that have only a single set of chromosomes while diploid cells have two sets of chromosomes.

☆ Define Diploid and Haploid Number of Chromosomes :

➢ All higher animal and plant cells have diploid number of chromosomes. Their each cell of body has two sets of chromosomes, one set coming from the sperm or male gamete and another set from the ovum or female gamete. The diploid number is represented by 2N or 2n.

➢ The gametes of these diploid organisms are formed by meiosis. Therefore, they have just one set of chromosomes or haploid set of chromosomes, represented by N or n. Since gametes have only one set of chromosomes, they are called haploid.
