- White light consists of many wavelengths. But in visible region there are 7 wavelengths (each wavelength corresponds to a colour). These 7 colours are "VIBGYOR" i.e Violet , indigo , blue , green , yellow , orange , red (These are written in increasing order of wavelengths ) .

" The phenomenon of splitting of white light into it's seven constituents i.e VIBGYOR when it is passed through a transparent medium (like prism ) is called dispersion of light "
