distributary in geomorphology are the streams or the water channels that flows away from the main river stream or parent water body, the phenomenon is river bifurcation where as tributary is the opposite as it flows in to the main river stream. :)

Answer: a branch of river that does not return to the mainstream after leaving it as in a delta is called distributaries.
