Answer:
- Double fertilisation is an event unique to angiosperms.
- After the dispersal from the anthers, pollen grains are carried by wind or various other agencies to the stigma of a pistil.
- The pollen grain germinates on the stigma and the resulting pollen tube grows through the tissues of stigma and style and reach the ovule.
- The pollen tube enters the embryo sac (female gametophyte) and discharge the male gametes present in the pollen grain.
- One of the male gametes fuses with the egg cell to form zygote. This is known as syngamy.
- The other male gamete fuses with the diploid secondary nucleus to produce the triploid primary endosperm nucleus (PEN).
- This primary endosperm nucleus develops into endosperm which nourishes the developing embryo.
