Answer:

Answer :-

It is a process in which ionic substances ( they are charged particle) are decomposed into the simpler substances when an electric current is pass through it.

Example :- Sodium (Na), magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca) are obtain by electrolysis of their molten chlorides. The metals are deposited at the cathode ( they are negatively charged ion ) whereas chlorine is liberated at the anode ( they are positively charged ion ).

At cathode :- Na^+ + e^- --> Na

At anode :- 2Cl^- --> Cl2 + 2e^-
