In chemistry and manufacturing, electrolysis is a technique that uses direct electric current to drive an otherwise non-spontaneous chemical reaction. Electrolysis is commercially important as a stage in the separation of elements from naturelly occurring such as ores using an electrolysis cell.

Electrolysis examples:Metals like sodium, potassium, aluminium, zinc etc. For strongly electropositive metals, molten electrolyte is subjected to electrolysis and for other less electropositive metals, aqueous solutions can be electrolysed.

Hope it helps

Explanation:

When electric current is passed through an aqueous solution of common salt, it decomposes the chemical compound, sodium chloride into sodium ions and chloride ions . This process is called electrolysis. The decimposition of an electrolyte when electric current is passed through it, is called electrolysis.
