FUNCTIONS OF ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM

Rough ER synthesizer protein

RER involved in post -translation modifications such as glycation

SER synthesizes phospholipids, cholesterol (in many

tissue) & steriod hormones (adrenals, gonads)

SER is site of glycogen metabolism

Stores & releases calcium ions in the cells . (that trigger contraction in muscle cells.)

In liver & kidneys SER detoxifies drugs and Harmful substances:

Removes the phosphate group from G-6-P; and release free glucose in blood.
