Epidermis
Epi :- upon ; derma :- skin.
Epidermis is the outermost layer of the primary plants that has direct contact with external environment.
They are made up of enlongated, compactly packed cells without any intercellular spaces.
The cells have large central vacuole surrounding by protoplasm.
Epidermis is generally single layered and sometimes multi layered in aerial roots.
In epidermis the outer wall is thick and they are usually covered by a cuticle. Cuticle prevents the loss of water.
Some epidermal cells of certain monocots are comparatively large and thin walled . These cells store water and help in closing and opening of leaves without breaking (due to changes in turgidity).
