Epidermis

Epi :- upon ; derma :- skin.

\bigstar Epidermis is the outermost layer of the primary plants that has direct contact with external environment.

\bigstar They are made up of enlongated, compactly packed cells without any intercellular spaces.

\bigstar The cells have large central vacuole surrounding by protoplasm.

\bigstar Epidermis is generally single layered and sometimes multi layered in aerial roots.

\bigstar In epidermis the outer wall is thick and they are usually covered by a cuticle. Cuticle prevents the loss of water.

\bigstar Some epidermal cells of certain monocots are comparatively large and thin walled . These cells store water and help in closing and opening of leaves without breaking (due to changes in turgidity).
