Define epithelial tissue? Explain its types with function?
Answers
Epithelial Tissue is normally known as epithelium. An epithelium is made up of one or more layers cells that lines the external and internal surfaces of various body parts.
Epithelial tissue is divided into two types,
(1) Simple epithelium :
It consists of a single layer of cells on a basement membrane.
It acts as a lining for body cavities, ducts and tubes.
The simple epithelium is divided into six types on the basis of their structure.
➛ Squamous epithelium :
It consists of a single layer of flattened cells.
Function :
- Filtration in Bowman's capsule.
- Exchange of gases.
➛ Cuboidal epithelium :
It consists of a single layer of Cuba like cells.
Function :
- Secretion and absorption by glands.
➛ Columnar epithelium :
It consists of a single layer of tall cells.
Function :
- Secretion and absorption.
➛ Ciliated epithelium :
If the Columnar cells bear cilia they are known as Ciliated epithelium.
Function :
- In respiratory tract, it helps in expelling the mucus and particles trapped in it towards the pharynx.
➛ Glandular epithelium :
Cells of epithelial tissue get specialized for the production of certain secretion are called glandular epithelium.
(2) Compound epithelium :
It consists of more than one layer of cells. Only the cell of the deepest layer are on the membrane
Answer:
Epithelial tissues are widespread throughout the body. They form the covering of all body surfaces, line body cavities and hollow organs, and are the major tissue in glands. They perform a variety of functions that include protection, secretion, absorption, excretion, filtration, diffusion, and sensory reception.
