Epoch (geology) ... In geochronology, an epoch is a subdivision of the geologic timescale that is longer than anage but shorter than a period. The current epoch is the HoloceneEpoch of the Quaternary Period. Rock layers deposited during anepoch are called a series.
An era is a span of time defined for the purposes of chronology orhistoriography, as in the regnal eras in the history of a given monarchy, acalendar era used for a given calendar, or the geological eras defined for thehistory of Earth.
