Minerals are usually extracted from ores which are rocks having a high concentration of a particular mineral .They are buried deep under the earthsurface .

The method of taking out minerals from these rocks buried under the earth is called mining. The method used for extraction of mineral depends upon depth at which the mineral is found under the earth .

● Ores that are found near surface of the earth are simply dug out by the process of quarrying.

● When minerals ores are located at a shallow depth, they are taken out by removing the surface layers. This is called open pit or open - cast mining.

● The mineral deposits that lie at greater depths are reached by deep bores. This is called deep shaft mining. A deep shaft mine has many underground chambers and the miners use lifts to reach these Chambers.

● Petroleum and natural gas occur far below the earth's surface . Deep wells are dug to extract them . This is known as drilling.
