Extraneous Root :

  • It is a root, or a solution, of an intermediate equation.
  • An equation is obtained in the process of solving a given equation ie., it is not a root of that given equation.
  • Extraneous roots appear while solving an equation we cannot always pass to equivalent equations when we simplify it.
  • Extraneous roots may arise cases in raising both sides of the given equation to a power, in clearing that equation of fractions, or in taking antilogarithms.
  • An extraneous solution is a root of a transformed equation ie., not a root of the original given equation because it was excluded from the domain of the original given equation.
