The female reproductive system refers to the set of organs which help in reproduction of offspring. They carry various functions such as production of gamete, favors the fertilization of sperm and egg, implantation and embryo development. After birth, nourishment is provided with the help of mammary glands.
Female reproductive system includes various organs such as:
Vagina: It is fibromuscular canal connecting the uterus (cervix) to the external vulva. It plays important role in accompanying penis during coitus. It serves as birth canal during infant delivery. It also serves as the passage to the uterus content at the time of menstruation.
Cervix: It is the lower part of the uterus and connects it to the upper part of the vagina. It directs the sperm to enter into the uterus from vagina as well as directs the menstrual flow from uterus to vagina.
Fallopian tube: A pair of fallopian tubes is present in female reproductive system. Each fallopian tube serves as a canal between ovary and uterus. The fertilized egg travels from ovary to uterus for implantation.
Uterus: It is hollow inverted pear-shaped organ which is known as womb as it serves as the site of implantation. The endometrium layer of the uterus shed during menstruation.
