COMBUSTION

A chemical process in which a substance reacts with oxygen to give off heat is called combustion.

The substances which undergo combustion are known as combustible substances. It may also be called a fuel.

A combustion reaction maybe written as

(a)   Charcoal burns in air to give carbon dioxide and heat.    C + O2 → CO2 + Heat

(b) Methane bums in air forming carbon dioxide, water and heat.           CH4 + 2O2 → CO2 + 2H2O + Heat

IGNITION TEMPRETURE

The lowest temperature at which a combustible substance when heated (as in a bath of molten metal) takes fire in air and continues to burn. — called also autogenous ignition temperature.

RAPID COPMBUTION

Combustion that takes place rapidly is called rapid combustion that is usually seen in si engine that is due to presence of spark plug .vehicle with more spark plug means faster combustion. it is also depend upon the kind of fuel that we use mainly petrol is easily combustible than diesel.

SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION

self-ignition of combustible material through chemical action (such as oxidation) of its constituents. also called spontaneous ignition.

CALORIFIC VALUE

The amount of heat released by a unit weight or unit volume of a substance during complete combustion.
