Spring Constant or force constant is defined as the applied force if the displacement in the spring is unity. It is denoted by k.
The dimensional formula can be worked out by using the spring force formula i.e. F = kx . This gives k = F/x. Dimensionally [k] = [F]/[x] = [M1L1T-2]/[MoL1To] = [M1LoT-2] .
its unit is:
k units = Newton/meter = kg-m/sec^2//m = kg/sec^2 because the length unit (meter) cancels out.
