Force is a push or a pull.

And no, two bodies don't need to be in contact for one body to push or pull the other one. You can verify this by jumping off a chair onto the floor. The force of gravity pulled you down off the chair onto the floor. That was the Earth's force pulling you down even though you were in the air and not in contact with it during that jump.
