Organic remains which have been preserved in rocks; the majority are of marine origin or lived in swamps ,lakes,etc.Fs . may be formed by refrigeration mammoths ; the preservation merely of the skeleton ; carbonization ,eg wood and leaves converted into coal; the formation of a mould or cast round the organism ; petrification , etc. Fs. provide evidence of the condition of earth at successive epochs,and of the life- history of the world.
