The opposing force which is exerted when an object tries to change its state of motion, it can be both against or with the motion, main purpose of friction is to prevent the relative slipping between the two surfaces in contact.
eg. 1) When applied brakes friction between brake pads and wheel surface stops the wheel.
2) The car goes forward when wheel rotates due to the friction
