A gene is a molecular unit of heredity of a living organism. It is a name given to some stretches of DNA and RNA that code for a polypeptide or for an RNA chain that has a function in the organism. Living beings depend on genes, as they specify all proteins and functional RNA chains.

Answer :-

A gene is an unit of specific biological functions.

Extra Information :-

  • Genes are located at a fixed position on a chromosome.

  • Genes are hereditary units.

  • Genes are made up of polynucleotides.

  • Genes contain instructions for the synthesis of polypeptides.

  • Genes vary greatly in size, from less than 100 base pairs to several million base pairs.

  • The ultrastructure of genes was provided by a scientist named- "Benzer" in the year 1957.

  • According to Benzer, genes consist of Cistrons, Recons and Mutons.

  • Most of the genes are randomly scattered along the chromosomes, however, some are organised into either groups or clusters.
