A service provider is a business that supplies expert care or specialized services rather than an actual product. In international markets, the term is used for companies that offer a variety of services such as: business management, technology, consulting, education and training, software and web services, engineering, marketing research, advertising and design, etc. Other service-related businesses, such as banks or mechanics, rarely are called a service provider, even though the name would fit. The commercial relationships between the service provider and its clients in international markets are governed through an International Services Contract.

GBS incorporates multiple functions and leverages business service delivery across all international operations, thinking and acting globally. Shared services have had to grow and mature to better service the global corporations they support, and are transforming into Global Business Services.
