Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) refers to the filtration process by the kidneys where they filter blood and remove waste and fluid products.
- This filtration process is prime necessary for normal excretion process. the GFR is used as a diagnostic test to estimate the functioning of kidneys.
- The GFR generally declines with age and other factors like patient’s size, age, height etc.
- The GFR is also used as a diagnostic index to grade chronic kidney disease.
- If the GFR of a person is greater than 90%, then he/she is said to be in good kidney health and if less than 15 may represent kidney failure.
