The changes may occur in progeny by two traits.
1. Inherited traits - the transfer of traits from parents to offspring.
example - colour, ear lobes ,etc.
2. Acquired traits - the traits which are gained by environment.
example - listening, speaking, observing, etc.

- in sexually reproducing organisms fusion of gemetes from male and female parents occurs, the offspring always has recombined genes of both the parents. These offsprings thus show some characters of either of the parents.
- also, sometimes sudden changes known as mutation occur in the genes. a change in the position of even a single nucleotide, can cause either a minor effect or a considerable alteration in the characters of an individual.
- if this changes (mutation) occur in DNA of germ line cells then, these changes would be inherited to the next generation.
