In organic Chemistry, a hetero atom is any atom that is not carbon or hydrogen. The term is used to indicate that non- carbons have replaced carbon in the back bone of the molecular structure. The various hetero atoms are- nitrogen, oxygen, Sulphur, chlorine, phosphorous, bromine and iodine.
