A homologous series may be defined as the family of organic compounds having the same functional group, similar chemical properties, and successive members of which differ by a CH2 unit or 14 mass units. Its properties:
(i) The general formula of all compounds in the series is the same.
(ii) They have the same functional group.
(iii) Their physical properties such as melting point, boiling point, density, generally show a gradual change with increase of molecular formula in the series.
