Novels were a source by which people understood their surroundings, different cultures and dilemmas.
Often the views of the reader were modelled on the basis of the novels.
Novels were often aimed at a certain section of readers.
For example, novels like Treasure Island and Jungle Book were aimed at young boys. They taught them to be chivalrous, curious and brave.
Novels like What Katy Did were meant for young girls. Novels like Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice showed the readers what the society expects from them as Victorian men and women. But often, novels like Jane Eyre taught women to stand up for themselves.
Novels reflected the views of the author on current dilemmas.
Charles Dickens and Emile Zola often wrote about Industrialization and the problems it brought.
Novels like David Defoe's Robinson Crusoe promoted the colonist code of conduct and inspired people to colonise.
To the colonisers, vernacular novels were important as they provided information about the native societies' culture, religion, practice, worship, lifestyle etc.
Novels were a medium of entertainment for the rich and the poor.
Novels were also a medium through which one criticised the society's defects and dilemmas like poverty, racism, casteism, sexism, dowry, colonialism, child-marriage etc.
