solution

Hybridization is the intermixing of orbitals of slightly different energies, so as to redistribute their energy and give rise to new set of orbitals that are similar in shapes and energy.

orbitals formed by overlapping of orbitals

types of overlapping

  • side ways overlapping
  • head to head

Explanation:

Atoms opt hybridization due to in ordinance in their valence electron and valency.....for eg: valency of carbon is 4 but it has only 2 unpaired electrons....so how it can make 4 bonds? when it has only 2 unpaired electrons. This problem was solved by Hybridization.

In carbon....hybridization involves P and S orbitals.

It goes from ground state to excited state...where 1 electron from S orbital is sent to the p orbital

After sending....The S orbital with one electron combines with the P orbital....this is known as hybridized state

Now this hybridized orbital is known as SP3 hybridized orbital

From here carbon makes 4 bond example is methane CH4
