Hypertonic solutions:- the solutions which have higher osmotic pressure than the other solutions are known as hypotonic solution.

example NaCl solution with the salt concentration 0. 91 percent is hypertonic solution.

Hypotonic solutions:-the solutions which have lower osmotic pressure then the other solution are known as hypotonic solution.

Example NaCl solution with salt concentration less than 0. 9 % in hypotonic solution.

 \huge \text {Answer-}

 \small \text {Hypotonic \: solution-}

If the medium surrounding the cell has a higher water concentration than the cell, i.e,if solution is a very dilute solution, the cell will gain water by osmosis, such a dilute solution is called hypotonic solution.

While water molecules free to pass across the plasma membrane in both directions, more water will enter the cell than leave. The net (over all) result is that water enters the cell. In such situations, cell is likely to swell up, i.e,beacome inflated or turgid. Such swollen RBCs may ultimately burst, i.e,haemolysed.

 \small \text {Hypertonic \: solution-}

If the medium have lower concentration of water than the cell, i.e, if it is very concentrated solution, the cell will lose water by osmosis. Such a concentrated solution is called hypertonic solution.

In this case too, water crosses the plasma membrane in both directions, but this time more water leaves the cell than enters it. Therefore the cell will shrink. In this situation, plant cells is said to be plasmolysed and animal cell (Red blood cell) is said to crenated.
