  • In classical mechanics, impulse (symbolized by or Imp) is the integral of a force, , over the time interval, , for which it acts. Since force is a vector quantity, impulse is also a vector quantity. Impulse applied to an object produces an equivalent vector change in its linear momentum, also in the same direction.

1)Define impulse

2)A stone of mass 6 kg falls from rest at a place where g = 9.8 ms^2.What is its KE at the end of 5th seconds.

1)

Impulse:

When a large amount of force acts on a body for a short while, it is known as Impulse.

2)

Mass of the stone =6kg

Initial velocity= 0

Acceleration =9.8

Time=5s

Using equation of motion:

 \boxed{s=ut+\frac{1}{2}at^2}

 s=\frac{1}{2}at^2=\frac{1}{2}\times 9.8 \times5^2 \\\\\sf =4.9 \times 25 =122.5

 \boxed{v^2=u^2+2as}

 v^2= 0^2+2\times9.8\times122.5 \\\\\sf v^2=2401

Now,

 \sf Kinetic~energy = \frac{1}{2}mv^2 \\\\\sf= \frac{1}{2} \times 6 \times 2401 \\\\\sf =3 \times2401=7203 Joule
