Indicator means a substance that is used to find the state of a object whether a acid or alkaline or base . Generally it is found by its texture,change in a colour and some sort of reactions etc. Here indicator perform change in colour and also by olfactory (smell) . Onion and phenolphthalein ,turmeric are two indicators obtained from plants.
