define indus water treaty


Anonymous: The Indus Waters Treaty was signed by then Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru and President of Pakistan Ayub Khan on September 19, 1960. The treaty was signed in Karachi and brokered by the World Bank.

Indus water treaty is water distribution treaty between India and Pakistan this treaty was signed on September 19,1960..Indus water treaty deals with Indus River and it's five tributaries all these rivers are classified into 2 categories 1.estern rivers(sutlej,Be as,Ravi)
2.western rivers(jhelum,chinab,Indus)
according to this treaty India should let unrestricted flow of Western rivers to Pakistan.but treaty does not say that India can't use water of Western rivers India can use water of Western rivers for non consumptive needs.Non consumptive means India can use it for irrigation and even for electricity production
