the elements whose octet are complete and are stable in nature so that they neither gain nor lose electrons that's why they are termed as inert gases.They lies in 18th group of modern periodic table.
other names-noble gas,zero valent
eg-helium ,argon,neon,Krypton,xenon,radon

They are termed so because they have Stable electronic configuration by octet or duplet rule so they neither gains or loses electrons..
due to which they becomes inert .They are also called noble gases.
