A protein complex located at the junction between epithelial cells, which are subjected to stretching and pulling, yet require tight contact between them so they can function as a single unit.

these usually occur just below tight junctions. the intercellular space at these places contain a clear, low density fluid . there is a dense plaque like structure on cytoplasmic side of each plasma membrane from which fine microfilament of actin (protein) extent into the cytoplasm . there is no intercellular filament between the adjacent cell membranes . ther is an adhesive material at this point . they probably serve anchoring functions
