ISOTOPES

Atoms of same elements having same number of protons. Isotopes have different mass number, however they have same atomic number.

Eg: Hygrogen, Deuterium, Tritium

1H1, 1D2, 1T3

Uses of these isotopes are

1. Hydrogen-1

•commercial fixation of nitrogen from the air in the Haber ammonia process.

•hydrogenation of fats and oils.

•methanol production, in hydrodealkylation, hydrocracking, and hydrodesulphurization.

•rocket fuel.

•welding.

•production of hydrochloric acid.

•reduction of metallic ores

2. Hydrogen-2

•Deuterium is not radioactive, and does not represent a significant toxicity hazard.

•Water enriched in molecules that include deuterium instead of protium is called heavy water.

•Deuterium and its compounds are used as a non-radioactive label in chemical experiments and in solvents for 1H-NMR spectroscopy.

•Heavy water is used as a neutron moderator and coolant for nuclear reactors.

•Deuterium is also a potential fuel for commercial nuclear fusion.

3. Hydrogen-3

•It is used in thermonuclear fusion weapons, as a tracer in isotope geochemistry, and specialized in self-powered lighting devices.

• tritium, is a rare, radioactive isotope of hydrogen

• Tritium is used to fuel nuclear fusion reactions.
