Define jazz improvisation and describe three kinds of improvisation.
Answers
Improvisation is an embellishment of a stated melody. By adding notes and turns to a melody, musicians create a new version of the tune. This form of improvisation is called melodic.
Another form of improvisation is harmonic. In harmonic improvisation, the soloist plays inside the chord changes. Novice soloists will play scales and arpeggios within the chords.
More experienced musicians may choose a motivic method. In this method, a jazz musician will follow the pattern of the chord changes, but will add motifs of the melody to create new variations.
As mentioned earlier, jazz improvisation allows for a tremendous amount of freedom. Like the author of a story, a musician may choose to provide the listener with a back story by hinting at the melody through the use of motifs. Next, he or she moves onto the the climax by increasing the speed of the notes played. Finally, the solo, just like a good story, ends with a slight relaxation....
