the SI unit of work or energy, equal to the work done by a force of one newton when its point of application moves one metre in the direction of action of the force.
Work =product of force and displacement
when displacement s is in the direction of force F
W=F . s
and when F=1 Newton and s=1 metre
we have W = 1 Newton . 1 metre
= 1 Nm
W = 1 Nm = 1 Joule = 1J
I hope this helps.
