Kinetic energy is a property of a moving object or particle and depends not only on its motion but also on its mass. ... Translational kinetic energy of a body is equal to one-half the product of its mass, m, and the square of its velocity, v, or 1/2mv2.

Energy possessed by a body when the body is in motion horizontally is known as Kinetic energy

Proof:
Consider a body with mass m moving with initial velocity u = 0, acceleration a and final velocity v to the distance s

We know
f = ma
a = f / m ------------(1)

From kinematic equation
v^2 = u^2 + 2as
v^2 = 0 + 2as ( as body is moving with
initial velocity u = 0)
from eq.(1)
v^2 = 2 × (f/m)s
f × s = 1/2mv^2
Work = 1/2 mv^2
But work is a measure of kinetic energy
Thus
Kinetic energy = 1/2 mv^2
