Answer:

the hidden heat which is given to a sub. to change its physical state

l.h.f solid change into liq

the process is called melting

lhv liq change into gas

the process is called boiling

Latent heat is the heat which is required for changing the physical state of a matter without any change in the temperature.

Spot the differences :

(1) Latent heat of fusion of ice is associated with solid form of water (ice) whereas latent heat of vaporisation is associated with gaseous form of water (vapour)

(2) Latent heat of fusion of ice is 80 cal/gm or 336 J/g but latent heat of vaporisation of water is 540 cal/gm or 2268 J/g

(3) Latent heat of fusion of ice is the amount of heat energy required by ice to change into water whereas Latent heat of vaporisation of water is the amount of energy required by water to change into vapour without any temperature change.
