The period between 1000 BC - 600 BC is known as the Later Vedic period. It is also called the Epic Age because the two great epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata , were written during this time. The Ramayana and Mahabharata deal with social,. political and religious aspects of life. The Upanishads were also written towards end of this period (600BC). These philosophical texts criticised the rituals and laid stress on the value of right belief and knowledge. They emphasised on purity of action
