unidentate ligands:contain 1 donor atom

bidentate ligands:contain 2 donor atoms

polydentate ligands:contain several donor atoms

ambident ligands:a lignd which contain 2 donor atoms but only 1 of them forms a coordinate bond at a time with central atom
