Longitudinal waves are those waves in which the particles of the medium move parallel to the propagation of the wave. For example, sound waves are transverse waves.Sound needs a medium to travel. Lets suppose that this medium is air. Then, the air particles move to and fro parallel to the direction of sound wave.

Longitudinal waves :

A wave vibrating in the direction of propagation

The Relation between longitudinal and sound waves :

For a sound wave traveling through air , The vibration of the particles are best described as longitudinal .

Longitudinal waves are waves in which the motion of the individual particels of the medium is in a Direction that is parallel to the Direction of energy transport
