Your lungs are part of the respiratory system, a group of organs and tissues that work together to help you breathe. The respiratory system's main job is to move fresh air into your body while removing waste gases.05-The lungs are a pair of spongy, air-filled organs located on either side of the chest (thorax). The trachea (windpipe) conducts inhaled air into the lungs through its tubular branches, called bronchi. The bronchi then divide into smaller and smaller branches (bronchioles), finally becoming microscopic.Your lungs are part of the respiratory system, a group of organs and tissues that work together to help you breathe. The main function of the lungs is the process of gas exchange called respiration (or breathing). In respiration, oxygen from incoming air enters the blood, and carbon dioxide, a waste gas from the metabolism, leaves the blood. A reduced lung function means that the ability of lungs to exchange gases is reduced

Lungs:

  • The lungs are a pair of spongy, air filled organs located on either side of chest( thorax). The trachea ( windpipe) conducts inhaled air into the lungs through its tubular branches, finally becoming microscopic.
  • The bronchioles eventually ends in clusters of microscopic air sacs called alveoli.
  • In the alveoli, oxygen from the air is absorbed into the blood. Carbon dioxide , a waste products of metabolism, travels from the blood to the alveoli, where it can be exhaled.
  • Between the alveoli is a thin layer of cells called interstitium, which contains blood vessels and cells that helps in support the alveoli.
  • The lungs are covered by the thin tissue called the layer pleura. The same kind of thin tissue lines the inside of the chest cavity also called pleura.
  • A thin layer of fluid acts as lubricant allowing the lungs to slip smoothly as they expand and contract with each breath.

Parts of lungs:

  • Trachea
  • Lobes
  • Bronchioles
  • Alveoli
  • Diaphragm

Functions of lungs:

  • Inhalation and exhalation are pulmonary ventilation( breathing).
  • External respiration exchanges gases between lung and bloodstream.
  • Internal respiration exchanges gases between bloodstream to body cells or tissue.
  • Air vibrating the vocal cords creates sound.
  • Olfaction, smelling is a chemical sensation.
