Management development is a systematic process of management training and growth by which individuals (aspiring to rise on the ladder of management) gain and apply knowledge, skills, insights, and attitudes to manage managers, workers and work organisations effectively.

Management development program (MDP) is concerned with improving the performance of managers in their present roles and preparing them to take on greater responsibilities in the future. It has been described by Mumford and Gold (2004) as 'an attempt to improve managerial effectiveness through a learning process'.
