Membrane biogenesis can be defined as the process of synthesis of cell membrane or plasma membrane of the cell. The cell membrane is synthesized using proteins and lipids produced in the cell. Endoplasmic reticulum plays a major role in membrane biogenesis.
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum synthesizes the lipids and some modification take place in golgi apparatus while proteins are synthesized on the ribosomes and their further modifications take place in the endoplasmic reticulum and golgi apparatus. These organelles help in the synthesis of lipids and proteins for the plasma membrane.
