The menstrual cycle is complex and is controlled by many different glands and the hormones that these glands produce.

MENSTRUAL CYCLE

The menstrual cycle is the name for the changes that happen in a woman’s body about once a month to prepare itself for a possible pregnancy.

During each menstrual cycle, an egg is released from one of the ovaries and the uterus (womb) develops a lining in which a fertilised egg could implant. If the egg is not fertilised by sperm, as is the case in most cycles, the lining of the womb breaks down and leaves the body - this is commonly known as having a period.
