Answer:

Metals are those elements, which lose ions to form positively charged cations.

Explanation:

Some important terms used in the definition of metals are:

1. Elements: Elements are those substances which are made up of only one type of atoms. For example, Na is made of atoms of Na only.

2. Ions: Whenever an element looses or gains electrons to become stable (ie to complete its octave or duplet), it becomes an ion.

*Ions are of two types:

i. Cations: They are positively charged ions, formed due to a metal losing electrons.

ii. Anions: They are negatively charged ions, formed when a non-metal gains electrons.

Some examples of metals:

1. Sodium (Na)

Electronic config.: 2, 8, 1

It will lose it's one atom from the last shell to complete its octave.

2. Magnesium (Mg)

EC: 2, 8, 2

It will lose it's two atoms from the last shell to complete its octave.

3. Aluminium (Al)

EC: 2, 8, 3

It will lose it's three atoms from the last shell to complete its octave.

Some more info on metals:

1. Generally, metals are shiny, hard, sonorous, malleable and ductile.

2. They generally form basic oxides.

3. Different metals react with different forms of water; some don't react with water.

4. A more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal from its salt solution.

5. Down a group in a periodic table, metallic character increases and across a period, metallic character decreases.
