These are the substances which are electropositive in nature i.e., they have a tendency to lose electrons.They generally have 1, 2, or 3 electrons in their outermost shell.

 

Metals are the elements that conduct heat and electricity and are malleable and ductile. Metals are also lustrous (Shiny) ,  strong and sonorous (which make ringing sound when struck ). Some of the examples of metals are Iron, Aluminium, Copper, Mercury, Zinc, Tin, Lead, Gold, and Platinum etc.

Example -

Also metals react with oxygen to produce oxides that are basic in nature ( the basic nature of metallic oxide can be tested with the help of litmus paper or a universal indicator). 

Example Mg will react with oxygen to form MgO which is basic nature

2Mg + O2 -----> 2MgO
