The middle class is a class of people in the middle of a social hierarchy
Nearly all of the leaders of the revolution were middle class - lawyers, journalists, and other professional people. They were the ones who had the education to actually take part in government, they were the original members of the third estate in the Convention. Look up any named revolutionary leader, and you will find that in nearly every case they were middle class.
