Military Causes

Discontent of the sepoys : The sepoys constituted the majority of the British army in India. In fact, The Sword of the British power rested on the loyalty and strength of these Indian soldiers called sepoys. Why did the sepoys revolt then ? The most important reason was that there were no common ties of race, language or religion between the British and the seroys. They where first Indians and then sepoys. Each time the British policy affected the Indians, it also affected the sentiments of the sepoys. Many of the sepoys belonged to Award and other affected areas. When members of their family suffered due to British oppression, they too reacted. Moreover, the sepoys where treated with contempt and where made to feel inferior by the British. They where paid less than their British counterpart. In spite of outstanding services there are hardly any scope of promotion for an Indian sepoy beyond the rank of Subedar. The extra allowance given earlier for serving in Sind and Afghanistan was cancelled.

Religion played a very important role in the lives of Indian including sepoys. Tge deliberate policy of the British to convert them to Christianity alarmed them. Though most of the sepoys, especially of the Bengal Army belong to the high-caste Hindu families, they where made to sit, and live together with the low-caste people in military barracks. They sepoys did not want their interference.
